The North Baltimore Public Library receives mini-Grant!
Library Director Lesley McKinstry is pleased to announce that the Library has been awarded an LSTA mini-grant by the State Library of Ohio in the amount of $15,794.
The grants were proposed along a “Trading Spaces” concept where the Director and staff of the Library would propose changes to “spruce up” the look and feel of the Library creating a more comfortable, user-friendly atmosphere. Ideas could include new furniture, new signage, new lights, and new equipment.
Lesley and our staff talked many hours last year about how we would like to improve our Library’s “look” and “feel”. We’ve already done some changes; moving and expanding some areas and made better use of existing furniture, and now we can add many new pieces of furniture and signs.
We hope the Library will become even more comfortable for our patrons to use. We invite you stop by and take some time to sit and read a good book in one of the many sitting areas we have.
Watch for changes in the coming months!

Book Chatters’
Our May selection: WATER FOR ELEPHANTS
by Sara Gruen
From Publishers Weekly
With its spotlight on elephants, Gruen's romantic page-turner hinges on the
human-animal bonds. The novel, told in flashback by nonagenarian Jacob
Jankowski, recounts the wild and wonderful period he spent with the Benzini
Brothers “Most Spectacular Show on Earth”, a traveling circus he joined during
the Great Depression. When 23-year-old Jankowski learns that his parents have
been killed in a car crash, leaving him penniless, he drops out of Cornell
veterinary school and parlays his expertise with animals into a job with the
circus, where he cares for a menagerie of exotic creatures[...]
Despite her often clichéd prose and the predictability of the story's ending, Gruen skillfully humanizes the midgets, drunks, rubes and freaks who populate her book.
